NEW 100 ADK chairs! Read as I progress through my journey of creating 100 variations on the Adirondak Chair theme!

I've been obsessed with the Adirondack chair form since I began working wood 16 years ago. Last summer I began to tinker with the design, changing seat height and back angles, sketching new lines, experimenting with new joinery techniques and hardware, playing with color. Dan Mack's love letter to this American icon - "The Adirondack Chair: A Celebration of A Summer Classic" was published in April. It is a wonderful book and inspires this journey.

My ADK chair vs the LL Beandak (Mine's bigger!)

I am making 100 Adirondack chairs because I can't help myself.  Each will be of my own design. I expect to build  two to three per week.  I am already behind schedule. Most will be simple, but I reserve the right to get complicated. Number 50 will be a settee, or a "two-seater" as we say in Maine. One might have fins. One will be made of sticks. They will all be painted a different fantastic color. They will all be numbered, dated and signed. Some will be for sale; in the $500 to $1,000 price range. I intend to sprinkle these throughout New England in special galleries and shops, two or three at a time. You will be able to see a listing of these on my website contact page. You may also buy direct from my site by dropping me an email. I encourage you to buy early and buy often. An image of each completed chair will be posted as well as availability status. I invite you to follow along via my blog. Comments are treasured. I would love to know what you think!

“What is most striking about the Maine wilderness is the continuousness of the forest, with fewer intervals or glades than you had imagined. Except for a few burnt lands, the narrow intervals on the rivers, the bare tops of mountains, and the lakes and streams, the forest is uninterrupted. It is even more grim and wild than you had anticipated, a damp and intricate wilderness, in the spring everywhere wet and miry. The aspect of the country, indeed, is universally stern and savage, excepting the distant views of the forest from hills, and the lake prospects, which are mild and civilizing in a degree.”

– Thoreau from Ktaadn , 1864
